On a snowy spring night in New York, in 1936, John Ringling, the Great Circus King, exited Madison Square Garden through a dark back alley. He walked out to 49th Street and met an old friend he hadn't seen in decades. Ringling, almost seventy, was disheveled and alone. The two of them sat at a bar near Union Square, where John Ringling recounted the story of the five Ringling brothers, their circus, and John's story as the last one on the lot. Seemingly in ruin then, John Ringling has had the Last Laugh, not only on those who forsook him but on the amusement world and the art world. Michael Lancaster is the great grandson of Charles Ringling, one of the five Ringling brothers. He is a sculptor and a fourth generation artist. He has spent over thirty years listening to the stories of the famed Boys From Baraboo. This is his first novel. It is not just a circus story, although there is a circus story in it; this is an American story.
Ringling The Last Laugh eBook Michael Lancaster
First, I have to disagree with the reviewer who felt that "fictionalizing” the history was inappropriate for conveying the true stature of the man, John Ringling. As a writer of historical fiction myself, I have given much thought to the fine line one must tread...when the story takes a direction different from actual facts. In Lancaster's book, however, the facts are the character, plot and resolution of the story. The device is wonderful for putting us into the thoughts and feelings of John Ringling. Everything else is gravy.Second, the flavor and nuances of the circus, that wonderfully American and romantic achievement of men like the Ringlings, shines through: we smell the sawdust and flinch when the storm threatens to pull down the canvas. It is a fascinating read, whether or not you are familiar with circus history. It gives a very personal insight into the business of holding together a dream. The aspirations of the young brothers, their trails and tribulations are epic in their own right.
Get it, read it, enjoy it, and learn. I wholeheartedly recommend this book!

Ringling The Last Laugh eBook Michael Lancaster Reviews
Excellent product, quick sale and very happy customer!! Thank you!
Nice magazine
I have read several of the Ringling books. And, this is as interesting as any of them. But, the author and "Ballyhoo publishing" either did not employ or did not listen to a professional editor. The result is a fictionalized bio that is intriguing and engaging but, unfortunately, also unnecessarily difficult to read - at times even exasperatingly confusing. On balance - still worthwhile.
at first I was put off by the style but the history of the Ringlings along with the era of the circus as the rock show extravaganza of its day plus the overwelming personality of John Ringling - it is an amazing insight into a lost era and an incredible character. highly recommended
This is the author's first book......reads a little disjointed but good stories.
Ringling is fascinating--it really pulls you in. You're immersed in the circus behind the scenes; that setting forms the backdrop of much of the book. Although it's fiction, the author's a Ringling descendant, and the characters in this Ringling family story ring as true as the circus milieu. A moving exploration of human strengths and frailties--highly recommended.
The book was interesting from a historical perspective. It was my book clubs book for the month and I look forward to the discussion next week. However it was very hard to follow so many names and jumped back and forth time wise. It was about twice too long with much repetition. My fav part was the the relationship between john ringing and his wife. I got a very strong feeling of how difficult their lives were.
